Current Water Conditions

(July 5, 2010)
Although many were predicting a very slight if any runoff for the 2010 season, we had to endure several years of a late and heavy runoff on the Troublesome.  It appeared that we were going to be back in business on the stream around the 11th of June, however more rain pushed us back until June 16th.  The wait was worth it though and when our anglers got back on the water the were excited to find great fishing conditions.  The water level in the Troublesome is now ideal and fishing has been very strong.  All stillwaters are fishing great too-with lots of dry fly action.

(May 2, 2010) Even though winter  made a brief return to the high country this past week, the Troublesome is fishing as well as it ever has.  Stream flows are ideal, and the stream is just off colored enough to make the conditions perfect for drifting nymphs past eager to eat trout.  All reports from our guides and anglers include catching lots of big healthy trout, and almost everyone is indicating the strong numbers of trout in the stream.  Lots of stone flies are being seen in the water, and as a result several larger bead head nymph patterns are producing amazing results.  Several anglers are combining traditional nymph patterns with some flash, like egg and san juan worms with amazing results.  One of our members recently reported that a guest he had on the stream caught the biggest trout of his long angling career in the Troublsesome, a 10 pound rainbow from the upper section!

Both Black Mountain and Hidden Valley are now ice free and also fishing well.  Look for big cruisers along the dam at Hidden Valley and in the main inlet-Browns and impressive brookies are dominating the scene at Black Mountain.

(August 12, 2009)  The Troublesome is fishing great right now, and has been for the last several weeks.  The trout have started to look to the surface much more and the dry fly fishing has been fantastic.  Water levels have really held up this year, so the flows in the stream are perfect, and our anglers are having a blast on the water,  Fish are being taken on big Dries, dry dropper and on tandem nymph rigs.  Hidden Vally Lake has also been fishing great, with lots of monster trout hammering dries like damsels, hoppers and stimy's.  If we really kept a count the big trout in this stillwater are beating up the anglers, these monsters are just a great challenge to bring to the net.  Right now the fishing and weather in our part of the Rockies is about as good as it gets!

(July 1, 2009)  Most of the last several weeks saw the Troublesome on a roller coaster ride of up and down flows, with the low flows being very high.  As the warm temps peeled the snow off the mountains, lots of rains added to the mix-so we had lots of water to deal with.  There were several days when the stream was condusive to fishing, the main factor was picking a day where the water was somewhat clear in color.  The good news is the higher water issues are behind us now, and the creek has settled into its normal summertime flow and the fishing is great.  The dry dropper rig is working well, and tandem nymphing is productive too.  All stillwaters are really fishing well-lots and lots of truly trophy fish being taken at the lakes.

(May 18, 2009)  High water still has the Troublesome on hold right now, but we think we are past the peak of the runoff for this season and are hoping to be back on the stream soon.  All stillwaters continue to fish great, especially for large trout!

(May 5, 2009)  Troublesome remains troublesome as high and inconsistant flows and clarity damper the stream.  Days following cooler night reseult in high but clearer water-and trout can be taken in softer water and protected areas throughout the ranch.  All three stillwaters we manage are picking up the slack for the run off occuring on the Troublesome, the lakes are fishing great and lots of BIG trout are being taken.

(April 28, 2009)  Run off conditions kicked in over the weekend, leaving the Troublesome high and murky.  A few fish are being taken, but fishing is tough at best as the creek tests the banks. Fish that are being taken are holding in areas protected from the heavier currents, and are keying on larger bright patterns that are easier to pick out in the off water.  All still waters have opened up over the past few weeks and are fishing extremely well.  Lots of BIG trout being taken over the last week or so.

(April 12, 2009)  The Troublsesome is running open with very nice flows, fishing on warmer days has been excellent.  Aglers can expect the clear morning waters of the creek to turn murky later in the day as the effects of runoff cloud the stream.  Still waters are still iced over.

(April 4, 2009)  Cold and snow is dominating the weather landscape right now.  The stream is still open, however single digit temps overnight can form thin layers of ice along slower moving stretches of water.  Warmer afternoons are producing windows of opportunities to enjoy some great early season fishing.  Stillwaters are still covered with ice at this time.

(March 25, 2009)  Winter has decided to fight Spring off for now at least, temps have dropped and new snow has covered the landscape.  The daily snow come and go, not any real significant accumulations though.  The real concern is cold temps ice the edges of the stream up each night, and with daytime highs rarely above freezing not lots of melting going on.  Cold spells like this make for short gaps of effective fishing throughout the day, best times are noon-four.

(March 17, 2009) St. Patrick brought some good luck to the Troublesome this week, with the warm temps and breeze most of the snow and ice left the valley floor.  The Troublesome is nearly 100% open and the flow is ideal for fishing, with lots of great action for the early season anglers.

(February 26, 2009) The Troublesome is only open in a few areas, most of the stream is still unfishable due to being iced over.  The few areas that have opened up enough to fish are producing nice trout on small nymph patterns-rubber legged copper/copper john is hot fly of the week...

(July 1, 2008) The Troublesome has made it through one of the longest runoffs in recent history and has now settled into a perfect flow for fishing.  The fishing has been awesome and were are looking forward to one of our best seasons yet. The big water has scoured out the stream and were looking forward to some great dry fly action.

Black Mountain Pond continues to fish great, both on top and down deep-We continue to have anglers hook up with monster trout that just can't be landed!

(June 13, 2008) The Troublesome Creek is still very high, but is starting to become fishable.  This has been a very intense year for runoff, but it looks as though better days are just ahead for the flows on the creek.  The Black Mountain pond is fishing as strong as it ever has, offering a great mix of browns, brookies, cutts and bows!

(May 8 2008) The Black Mountain Pond is open and fishing well, it should improve as temps warm up.  The Troublesome is at peak runoff right now, out of the banks and completely unfishable.
